Spellbinding virtuoso improvisation from all 3 players!
The trio is ”The Alan Tomlinson Trio”, we play improvised music only, played and conceived on the spot. The trio has played together for over 15 years. All are experienced improvising musicians and have, in various contexts and combinations played all over Europe and USA.
Since 80’s active in European improvised music scene, with broadcast festivals & recordings. Has worked professionally in all areas of music & was a long time member of Barry Guy’s London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Works with own trio, with a trio in Berlin & a duo with the Romanian poet Virgil Mihaiu.
As a member of London New Wind Ensemble and Sounds Positive has given several first performances of solo pieces written for him. Recently formed a recital duo with the pianist Marylin Wyres.
A performer of uncanny precision, with apparently unlimited sound effects played brilliantly (John Fordham, The Guardian)
Alan Tomlinson stormed away with the whole show (The Wire)
Some recent solos – with a Glass Trombone, with a fish & chip van on its round , & in a sewer outlet.
Phillip Marks has been performing and promoting improvised music in Manchester, the UK and Europe since the mid-80s. He is a founder member of Bark! with Rex Casswell and Paul Obermayer, a member of the Grew Quartet and has performed with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, John Butcher, Mick Beck and many others.
Mark’s percussion work shapes and holds it together. His drumming drives the music along and gives it its pulse- enough indeed …to describe it as ‘James Brown meets the spirit of Modernism!’ not a phrase often attributed to improvised music. (John Eyles, alllaboutjazz.com)
Started performing and recording in the mid-70’s recording with Mellatron and in the early 80’s recording and touring with “The Fall”
Since the mid 80’s has been resident in London. Studied Improvisation under Phillip Wachsmann while performing with Andy Sheppard, Johnny Dyani, John Stevens, Dudu Pukwana and Bobby Bradford as well as others. In 1992 started performing with Alan Tomlinson Trio and Scatter, two long lasting projects as well as joining the London Improvisers Orchestra in ’99.
Over the years has performed within groups and solo in North and south America, Europe and Russia with a wide variety of Musicians and in many contexts.
