The Galliard Ensemble, Wind Quintet, have hosted a composition competition in the past and whilst it was running they were delighted to discover many outstanding wind quintets, enabling them to make lasting partnerships with composers from all over the world which included recordings and world premieres. After an interval of a few years the quintet decided to open up the composition competition to celebrate their 20th anniversary of playing together.
“It seemed the most obvious way to celebrate our career together encapsulating what we are all about as a group. This time we wanted to invest our energy into composers in full time higher education in the UK. The parameters were smaller but the response no less prolific (although the students lived up to their reputation with a rush of entries at the eleventh hour.) Our winning piece was Five Miniatures by Joshua Borin. It stood out from the already talented crowd. The music had great wit and fitted together perfectly; vibrant flavours moved effortlessly between the instruments and we all felt immediately that this piece would be journeying with us from now on. ”
