For the first time ever the Harwich Festival of the Arts is presenting a fully-staged opera in St. Nicholas’ Church as part of this year’s programme. Opera a la Carte is one of the UK’s most exciting and original chamber opera companies. Its charismatic founder and director Nicholas Heath is renowned for his fast-moving and thought-provoking productions which aim to challenge, entertain and transport the audience without being elitist or overly highbrow.
Puccini’s ‘Madam Butterfly’ is one of the best-loved operas of all time. It’s the heart-wrenching and exotic tale of Pinkerton, an American naval officer who, whilst stationed in Japan, arranges to take a bride – Butterfly. The themes of honour, duty and shame are played out in Puccini’s rich and beautiful music which combines Eastern and Western melodies to portray the jarring collision of two cultures. Rising young stars Elizabeth Roberts and Alex Tsilogiannis play the two main characters and a strong cast and first-rate instrumentalists ensure that you will have an unforgettable evening.
St. Nicholas’ Church, Friday June 27th, 7,30pm.
Tickets £20. £10.
